Aspects Of Novel
British Novels |
18th
century is known for Prose, but the rise of fiction is an important aspect
of this era. In this century novel emerged as a new and significant mode of
writing. The most amazing side is, besides providing entertainment it was also
a mean of logical questioning. Because of that society was benefited and lead
to change in the ingrained attitude of the people. Let's have a look at the different Aspects
Of Novel :
The Novel As A Fiction
The novel shows the life of
common people, in a realistic form, experienced by a man or a woman in a
particular period of time. We can not deny the fact, the novel is a
reflection of the society as compared to poetry or drama.
The novel takes an account
of social situations with its problems and issues. The reader doesn't come
across the major flights of imagination. On the part of the writer, they had
concluded that the characters of his story are from day to day kind, chatting,
moving around, working without the high furnishing of the mind, psyche or soul.
These people are hardly
poeticized or saw themselves in the heroic mould. Novelist usually sees the
ordinary goals of the people to earn bread and butter and this is where most of
their waking hours are spent.
Emphasis is basically on
actuality. Besides speaking in their own mannerism, characters of a novel
are embellished with ordinary appearance, condition, state of mind and views.
Obviously, the writer is biased in his or her judgement. The author is the one
who decides the fate of the characters besides showing their behaviours' effect
on life and nature. Here, I would like to say that the author has always been a
responsible member of society.
The way an author delivers his
remarks surely makes the reader accept that as a truthful account. The reader
is mostly immersed in the ethos of the imaginary world of the novel. Even
sometimes, the readers may feel like a witness to the incidents happening
in the novel and characters seem real to them. That's the reason novel is
considered as a realistic form.
'Imaginative': As a
term used for something which is unreal, mind's creation. An author uses his
imagination and uses the words as a tool to fulfil his specific purpose whether
that is spiritual, moral or artistic. but if we would see a novel in terms of
core imagination then poetry seems more relevant as compared to the novel.
"Non-Fact" or
"A Lie": This is a known aspect. And, all those who are fond of reading
can not deny that they escape from their daily routine and drudgery when they
relish reading a novel. Because it takes them to a different world where they
feel more relaxed as well as excited to know more about the characters,
settings and plot. The writer keeps an eye on his audience's mood and
constantly makes every effort to know what his or her audience willing to hear.
Here is a difference, if we talk about poetry and drama then we are more sure
of this that these creations are totally based on the author's imagination or
invention. But they can not be equated with a lie.
Walter Ellen in his
book "The English Novel" beautifully diverted our attention to
the way an author creates plot on the basis of his or her own experience. An
author moulds the characters into the shape and conveys significant impressions
through them. For the matter of fact, they are fictional because here what exactly
works is the author's imagination that too in an intense manner.
The Novel As History
Mainly what gives life to a
novel are the characters. their life revolves around the plot and designed in a
particular setting. Here the main challenge is the life-like situations that
the author is likely to invent. Because the characters in the novel are
impossible to be constituted or created if they are not arranged in
identifiable circumstances. We associate the men and women in a work of fiction
with the period in which the writer has witnessed the trends that existed at
the time. In a strange way, society becomes an inevitable part of the fiction.
This way Fiction becomes significant History.
* This inference makes it
possible to blur the line between the imagination and the reality when history
imminently enters.
